Xerox Chip Errors, Install Messages and How to Check the Part Number
Xerox VersaLink and AltaLink devices authenticate toner with a customer-replaceable unit (CRU) chip. Messages such as install new cartridge, non-Xerox toner, or repeated reseat toner usually mean one of four things: the wrong OEM code, a damaged chip contact, a toner not pushed home, or a supply that is empty despite leftover powder.
1 — Confirm the OEM part number
Compare the code on the toner with the machine’s required CRU list. Examples from our live catalogue:
- - VersaLink C7020 / C7025 / C7030 — 106R03737 (K), 106R03738 (Y), 106R03739 (M), 106R03740 (C); drum 113R00780
- - VersaLink C7100 / C712x — 006R01824–006R01827; drum 013R0688
- - AltaLink C81xx / C82xx — 006R01746–006R01749
- - VersaLink C400 — 106R03516 / 106R03528 and colour 106R03517–531
A C7000 toner will not satisfy a C7020, even when the cartons look similar.
2 — Reseat and inspect
Power the device on, open the toner door, remove the cartridge, check the chip window for toner dust or cracked plastic, gently reseat until it latches, and close all covers. Run a supply status page from the UI.
3 — Waste and drums
Some faults blamed on “toner chips” are actually a full waste bottle (for example 108R01124 on related VersaLink families) or an end-of-life drum. Check life counters before replacing all four colours.
4 — Genuine supplies
Rainbow Sales supplies genuine Xerox CRUs. If a brand-new genuine cartridge still errors after reseating, contact us with the device serial, exact UI message, and order number — do not return empties mixed with unused stock without a returns note.
