Genuine Manufacturer Cartridges vs Compatible Supplies

Genuine (OEM) cartridges are made by the printer manufacturer — Xerox, Canon, HP, Ricoh and others. Compatible or remanufactured cartridges are made by third parties to fit the same machines. Rainbow Sales’ catalogue emphasis is Genuine Xerox, Genuine Canon imagePROGRAF, and other genuine OEM supplies with the manufacturer part number in the title. Own-brand or compatible lines, if still sold, must be kept in a separately labelled collection — never mixed into OEM collection copy.

Chips and firmware

Modern toners and ink tanks include a chip that reports levels and authenticity. Manufacturer firmware updates can change how a device talks to that chip. Genuine supplies are designed for those updates. Compatible cartridges may work on today’s firmware and fail after an automatic update — a common cause of “cartridge not recognised” or “remove and reinstall” messages.

Yield and colour

OEM cartons publish ISO page-yield or millilitite capacity (for example Xerox extra-high 16,500 pages, Canon PFI-320 300ml, HP 730 130ml). Genuine toner and pigment sets are tuned to the engine’s densitometry. That matters on colour presses (C60/C70, 550/560/570) and on colour-critical imagePROGRAF PRO/GP devices with chrome optimiser or fluorescent inks.

When compatible might still appear in the market

Some offices historically bought compatibles to reduce cost. If you choose that path elsewhere, understand the trade-offs: possible firmware lock-outs, unsupported print-quality complaints, and recycling programmes that only accept genuine empties (Xerox Green World Alliance and Canon’s UK recycling both specify genuine Canon/Xerox supplies).
